Deloitte Australia Partners’ Conference 2016

Last week, we had another wonderful annual Deloitte Australia Partners’ Conference, which saw us return to beautiful Queensland.

There were many highlights and learnings, but one particular highlight was hearing from Christine Holgate, the CEO and MD of Blackmores Limited, in which Ms Holgate related the following insightful quote from Marcus Blackmore that reminds us to not take good health for granted:

A sick man has but one dream; a healthy man has many.

Deloitte Foundation

I’m glad to have been appointed as one of the two  Sydney sponsoring partners of the Deloitte Foundation.

We undertake the normal charity work that one would expect of such a foundation. This allowed me to attend an excellent function on Wednesday evening for one of our supported charities, Good Return. Good Return has deployed millions of dollars to fund micro-loans to the most needy in our region (with a 99.99% repayment rate!). It’s a wonderful charity and organisation that deserves our support.

One of the takeaways from the function was a great quote from Gloria Steinem, a famous journalist, author and feminist, which was:

We have to be what we want to happen.

A great thought indeed!

An environment where you can safely fail

catherine-raffaeleIt might seem counterintuitive to many people (particularly those in large professional services firms), but having an environment where you can safely fail can lead to great success.

My long time friend, Cathy Raffaele, is studying this as part of her PhD at one of my Alma maters, The University of Technology, Sydney. Here is a link to a story by Cathy on her work.

10 fitness tips and myths

Here is an interesting article from Emily Skye on 10 fitness tips and myths.

Some are quite interesting and are against some commonly accepted fitness wisdom, including:

  • eating carbohydrates at night isn’t necessarily a no-no; and
  • interval training is better than long, slow cardiovascular sessions.

Bulk billed home doctor services in Sydney

emergency photoRecently, we’ve had the need to call doctors to our home after hours to treat one or other of our children when they were sick. Fortunately, our kids only come down with the normal types of childhood bugs and there are great bulk billed (ie no payment by you) home doctor services available in Sydney.

Summarised below are the details of the two bulk billing home doctor services in Sydney of which I am aware that service our area are:

1. National Home Doctor Service

This is the service that we have happily used thus far. They also have a great app that you can install on your smart phone, which makes booking an appointment really easy (

An added benefit is that they can provide many prescribed medicines free of charge, if you are a member of the BUPA health fund.

2. Australian Locum Medical Service / GP2home

Ipoh Town, Grosvenor Place

Just had takeaway lunch at the new Ipoh Town Malaysian takeaway restaurant in the food court of my office building at Grosvenor Place in Sydney.

I had Nasi lemak with beef rendang. It was delicious. The beef rendang could have been slow-cooked a bit longer, but it was still yummy! I also took advantage of their $2 Malaysian drink special and had a lovely cold Teh tarik.

The service was excellent – fast and very friendly.

I’m so glad to have a good Malaysian takeaway restaurant down this end of town! Highly recommended.

Today, I had satay chicken and rice.

The accompanying drink offer is now $1!
